Module 5 / Lesson 13.1
The Risk Landscape
This lesson introduces Chapter 6 (“The Risk Landscape”) of Toby Ord’s The Precipice: Existential Risk and the Future of Humanity, pages 165–186.
Purpose: This chapter begins Part Three of the book: The Path Forward. After exploring individual threats (like nuclear war, pandemics, and AI), Ord steps back to examine the entire landscape of existential risk, how these dangers interact, how we can compare them, and how to decide which deserve priority attention.
13.1.1: Quantifying the Risk
- Learning: Read Ord, pp. 165–170.
- Reflection: As you read the estimates for various existential risks (such as those presented in the table on page 167), consider the evidentiary basis for those numbers. What type of data (historical, scientific, theoretical) supports the probabilistic assessment for each risk?
13.1.2: Combining and Comparing Risks
- Learning: Read Ord, pp. 171–175.
- Reflection: As you read, think of examples where two risks are highly correlated (e.g., one catastrophe makes another more likely) versus an example where they are independent (e.g., asteroid impact vs. a distant stellar explosion)
13.1.3: Risk Factors
- Learning: Read Ord, pp. 175–179.
- Reflection: As you read, think of what is the critical difference between an existential risk (e.g., nuclear war) and an existential risk factor (e.g., peace between great powers)?
